  • Unique but with limitations

Since Szigeti died before the digital age of recording, the sound in all his recordings isn't as clean as what you'd find in recordings from contemporary artists. This means you get some a bit of a rough sound, but at the same time, without filters washing away every little hiss and scratch, you get what seems to me a very "real" sound. It's ultimately a matter of preference, but despite a very real sound, I prefer clean tones. As for his interpretation of Bach, it is unlike what you'd find from contemporary artists like Vengerov, Shaham, Repin, etc. His play of the Chaconne from the 2nd partita is dynamic and dramatic, but seems at times without direction, which is disappointing coming from an artist like Szigeti whose phrasing is usually stellar. Still, there is a lot of power and passion in the full bodied chords of the multi-voiced Bach compositions. Three stars for uneven performance and outdated (though no fault of Szigeti's) recording technology.

There are two major reasons why you should think twice about buying this recording. Maybe it's the fact that Szigeti didn't have digital recording and editing available, but the sound quality is muddled and imprecise. He plays like an old man, and there are a lot of slips and misses. Second, the interpretation of this baroque music is a little off. Why use spicatto? I always think that Solo Bach needs to sound more like organ music and less like a wannabe concerto. I don't think the phrasing is very musical. A good reason TO buy this work is because Szigeti is a famous artist of a bygone era. Students will hear a very different sound than the very polished, modern interpretations that are being released nowadays. To hear the difference forces one to compare, and to compare forces one to think. To think is always paramount in Bach.
