Massive

I have held off on buying this for years. I love Mastodon, but I became a fan during their "lighter" later years (the first time I saw them live was when they were touring in support of The Hunter), so this album always intimidated me. It always loomed in the shadows, and I considered purchasing it many times. Now that I've purchased it and listened to it, I feel silly. This is their heaviest album, but not oppressively so. The instrumentals are standard Mastodonian fare, but the vocals are just guttaral screaming. Those instrumentals though; holy hell. Brann is on top of his game, and is the star of the show. Brent's clean guitar perfectly intertwines with and layers on top of Bill's guitar and Troy's bass. This is great stuff. If you are a fan of the band (even if, like me, you got on the bandwagon recently), this is a must have.
Holy Cow!

I will admit, I am a late comer to the Mastodon bandwagon. But, like they say, better late......My initial introduction to the band was through a couple of random YouTube videos a while back but was recently loaned a copy of their new release "Emperor Of Sand". After giving it a listen I immediately bought their debut LP "Remission"! Holy Freaking Cow! This album blew me away. I'm not by any means a fan of Black Metal vocal stylings but they fit so well with the uncompromising and relentless musicianship on this release. I'm officially hooked!
The best

The newer, more progressive albums that Mastodon has released are good but Remission is their greatest, straight out, Heavy album. Highly recommended. Buy it.

And this is also Mastodon...not the new Mastodon that makes songs like "The Hunter", but the Mastodon that was a metal band.
On John Henry's IPod

This is what ole John Henry listened to prior to getting those men out of the mine shaft. Seriously, the vocals are so perfectly powerful and brutal. The music is relentless, but purposeful and distinct. Poor John listens in Heaven now with Paul Bunyan.
Great album

I really like the raw anger on display and the amazing musicianship that mastodon always provides. My favorite is definitely elephant man, I love mastodon's instrumentals! But the two minutes of wind noises are a bit strange, reminds me of pink Floyd with their strange, nonsensical sound effects at the end of songs
