Guitar players, music heads, and jazz-friendly listeners: you really must hear—and I would suggest, buy—Ben Monder's amazing 2013 album "Hydra"—imagine Bill Frisell, Pat Martino and Terje Rypdal taking 'shrooms together, and inviting Brian Wilson, Gilberto Gil and Gyorgy Ligeti to create choral textures emanating from what shamans call "non-ordinary reality." Fans of Opeth and Mastodon's math-metal will even find plenty of harder motifs to dig on this ambitious and deep, deep record. Sonic sorcery, indeed . . .
