As a fan of Ms Dominguez since her earliest work with kidneythieves, I can honestly say she continues to raise the bar, to pursue growth musically and lyrically all while creating a dazzling body of work.
Volcano + The Sea is no exception. Dominguez pushes her vocals to new heights, perfectly marrying them with the keen guitar work. Her hallmark has always been thoughtful and expressive, often abstract, lyricism. One will be tempted to listen to a single track over and over to grasp the nuance of each verse. Instead, it's best to put all 10 tracks on endless loop and follow the emotional and philosophical journey of the album. There's not a single note of filler; it's all pure, painstaking craftsmanship.
I can't heap enough praise on this album. You'll be addicted from the first few notes. At a time when music has fallen into a cookie-cutter, cacophonous bunch of noise to be consumed by the tone-deaf masses, a genuinely innovative album like this is a welcome breath of fresh air.
