I heard about Matthew Mayfield when he was to tour with Blue October but had never listened to him before yesterday. I snagged a cool shirt and a couple of CD’s from his website and received them in mail and popped this one in the car player on my way to work. I loved every song and then got to track 3, “Miles and Miles”, I literally teared up and got goosebumps as I held on to every word. That hasn’t happened in a long time, can’t wait to hear all of his work. Needless to say, I finished the CD and the entire album is great! I am a new fan!

I absolutely love him. He is amazing in every way. His voice is haunting. You feel it in you're soul. His lyrics are timeless and raw and real. He makes me cry and my heart skips a beat I lose my breathe everytime. He is my favorite! =)

Highly anticipated album and it didn't disappoint. Thank you for being the voice in my headphones getting me through the best and worst times since 2008. I will forever be a fan!

It's taken me a while to work up the gumption to write this review. Being honest isn't always easy. Anyway, here goes:
As always and once again, Matthew delivers with his lyrics and his voice. Matthew's writing style is honest and his words are delivered in a voice that feels naked and hides nothing. As such, the tracks that are stripped down and acoustic do this man justice. If you allow yourself to disappear into the music, you will lay witness to what drives this man and catch glimpses of his Soul.
Conversely, the tracks with additional instruments in the background really disappointed me. The drumming and rhythm guitar are so...I'm struggling here for the right words...mechanical? canned? monotonous? I don't quite know how to put it--as a comparison, many of the tracks on The Fray's most recent album (Scars & Stories) are disappointing in the same way. In fact, it's a chronic problem in a lot of recorded music lately. Just as you can pour your heart into your voice, so too can you pour your heart into an instrument. And that is what is missing on Irons. I am of the belief Matthew's music is both deserving and very capable of playing within a "band" setting, however. I've seen him live and the additional instruments were on point. Plenty of soul. Overall, I think most listeners will not notice what I'm nit-picking at, so I definitely recommend this EP. And if you find this EP to be impressive, his album A Banquet for Ghosts will blow you out of the water, so check it out.
