Smart & clever lyric, but a bit over-produced

A strong single for Sam from his upcoming Debut album, "Me Without You" features a smart lyric with some nice surprises in the unpredictable rhyme points. Unfortunately the mix isn't up to Kurt & Sam's usual standards. The lead vocal is sort of lost in the mud. At times it has a watery sound, as if this tracks have been run through a guitar wa-wa filter. Over-processing and "sweetening" is fine for the majority of pop singers who don't have trained voices, but here it almost sounds like a deliberate "dumbing down" of Sam's amazing voice to create a generic "demo" recording. The driving arrangement gives it a classic power ballad feel, but I kept expecting—and hoping for—some kind of sonic surprise that makes you say "woah!"
