Dynamic Debut Album

I have always tried to define in my mind the term "New Age" music. With the Fairlight Computer Program & Linn Drum Program dominating music in the early to mid 1980's, I recall while living in North Texas toward the late 1980's a new type of music began to find its' way into my ears. The music was soothing, sometimes energetic, and always uplifting--even when tackling heavy subject matter. Gone were the Linn drums and the nice but limited Fairlight programs. Enter music for the mind, the New Age. With that came newer, more sophisticated instruments and a totally new way of listening to music: music that not only moved you physically & emotionally, but New Age music was/is a life changer. It is not everyone's cup of tea, but it sure fits mine so well. With that in 2004 enter Kori L Carothers.
Oft times an artists debut work, whether it be visual or as in this case audio, is a culmination of their experiences up to that point. A debut album is all so important, something to grow from; not unlike a seedling: a very good indication of where this artist is heading musically. 'The Road Less Travelled' by Kori Linae Carothers is such a joy for that reason alone: what is it that moves her, and in Kori's case we are introduced to her varied and dynamic influences ranging from Spanish to even Eastern influences. I am almost inclined to say that in it's own way, each of her compositions are to me are a type of anthem: something that speaks loudly without being loud. Heavy hitting melodies without being weighty. The sonic variety she displays (with the help from one of the greatest musical instruments: the Korg) range from classical piano, harpsichord, synthesizer, to traditional piano. The fullness of the songs on 'The Road Less Travelled' are often accompanied by beautifully lush orchestral arrangements. But never do these arrangements overshadow her wonderful piano playing (which is extraordinary), but more compliment and enhance--which may sound easy, but is often a difficult feat to pull off. Case in point: check out the orchestral arrangements by George Martin on The Beatles' 'Revolver' album for a fine example of this technique.
'The Road Less Travelled' is an album that you can put your headphones on and be carried away like a fine Spring breeze. Some may find Kori all over the map on her freshman effort, but to me that is one of her strong suits and it is enlightening. An artists' first offering should do just that: help define their style, while exploring new avenues--giving us a glimpse or hint into their future work to come. When I am introduced to an artist, whether it be in the visual arts or audio, I am inclined to go to the Beginning. To see where it All Started. 'The Road Less Travelled' does that well for me. The production is very tasteful, every sound you hear is necessary and well placed. With several albums under her belt, Kori L Carothers is well known in New Age circles. This album as I mentioned earlier is dynamic and to me, almost a soundtrack of sorts. When listening to this album I can see so well the many places in my life and the lives I have encountered during my life's journey that her songs seem to emulate. This is no accident, her musical tastes are laid bare for all to see, and clearly (at least to me) this is an album that foreshadows a career of Love. Love for music and of her craft.
I personally love this album, it is light and carefree and wonderful music to drive to or just sit back and let it fill your abode. I guarantee you a smile on your face, beauty in your heart, via your ears. I recommend this album to New Age veterans and newcomers alike. I consider myself to be 'picky' about what I expose my ears to whenever possible and this album never tires in my mind. I would label this album timeless.
