This is the most fun I've had listening to a Mastodon album since Remission. Don't get me wrong, I liked Crack the Skye more than most, but that was an album that I'd listen to alone, with headphones; a serious album meant to listened to... seriously. This is the first Mastodon album in ten years that I can really just rock out to in my car on my way to work, shut it off, then pick up right where I left off. Sure it's shallow, but the riffs are great, the "clean" vox are better than they've ever been, and the drumming on this is mind blowing. And we can't forget about Scott Kelly. Waiting 4 or 5 years between Neurosis albums is hard, so I get excited whenever he guests on an album. If you like anything Mastodon had done before you owe it to yourself to at least check this out.

I got to say its not that bad of this album but I would maybe consider the old mastodon albums more.
  • Not Mastodon's best, but my favorite.

Blood Mountain, Crack the Skye, an Leviathan were lyrically ahead of this album, I agree. However, Mastodon on this album sounds much tighter and coordinated. The vocals are still hard and heavy, but not like old Mastodon, which, if you're like me, is a good thing. Dont get me wrong, I LOVE older Mastodon, but The Hunter is definitely more my thing. Definitely one of my favorite metal albums of all time. Recommendations: Blasteroid, Spectrelight, Black Tongue, Bedazzled Fingernails. Stay away: The Sparrow, The Hunter I will say that the above 2 songs are not very good and they do not sound like Mastodon at all. Creature lives could fall into that category as well, but I think that's more of a joke song that Brann Dailor did and they just kind of threw it on the album, and I actually don't mind it.
  • Different but still good

This album is more "radio-friendly" (if you can use that term with mastodon) with shorter songs and more traditional formats, but I still like it. I differ from others in my opinion of the recording quality. I think it sounds very muddy and flat; all the instruments and the vocals are at the same level except for the bass guitar which is buried somewhere 5 feet below everything else, and nothing sounds polished or differentiated from anything else. The vocals are really effects heavy to the point of being unintelligible occasionally, which kind of defeats the purpose of not screaming/growling. It has kind of a "we recorded this ourselves" sound. Still, the songs are pretty decent, but if you're going to buy only one mastodon album, this ain't it.
  • Awesome!

This is the second best album by them. Crack The Skye is still a bit better. It seems they went into more of a melodic and rock oriented album this time. The album is still heavy and pummeling, but the songs are much more focused. The production on this album is perfect. I'm glad this band is trying new things because its boring when a band releases the same sounding album over and over. I'm excited to see where they will take their sound next.
  • Probably my least fave

Not terrible. Still mastodon-sounding. Some good tracks like The Sparrow. But the song about the creature... Gag me. Definitely would rather listen to Blood Mountain or Crack The Skye

I had just recently became familiar with Mastodon and this Cd was my first introduction to their music. I really like it but after picking up the rest of their catalog soon after, I understand why their hardcore fans don't like it. As for "Prog-Metal" I think the songs are still complex and musically these guys flat out jam... I just prefer the vocals on this disc over their earlier stuff due to the fact that I'm not a big fan of screaming/gargling vocals!
