I think some of my fellow reviewers are either overly critical or are in need of a audiologist. Deb sounds amazing, and her voice suits this powerful song to a T.

Debbie sings a great song---inspiring and uplifting. Would make a great theme song for Americans in our present economic and political situation! Thank you Debbie.
Beautiful lyrics & melody, poor vocalization

"Rise" gets an A for melody and lyrics. It's a beautiful song that was written for a good cause. However, it pained me to dock the rating two stars because Deb's singing style has changed dramatically in recent years. Gone is the pure, beautiful voice showcased in her earlier work; now it's slurred, squeaky and borderline unpleasant. Not unpleasant relatively speaking...simply unpleasant. Deb even commented in an interview or a website posting a few years ago that her singing style was becoming more raw and less concerned with perfection (or something along those lines), so I firmly believe that her voice itself is as strong as ever. However, her vocalization on most recordings from the "Colored Lights" album forward does a tremendous disservice to her as a singer and a songwriter, the latter because her lyrics are often unintelligible now (listen to "Already Gone" and you'll see what I mean.) Very unfortunate.
Such a beautiful, heartfelt song!

i really, really love this song! gorgeous melody and beautiful, touching lyrics! i think debbie has really done a fantastic job with this one.... she sounds great and the addition of the backing choir is a perfect touch! i read some negative reviews and really don't understand them. i really can't fault this record in any way. in my opinion, it's quite a great accomplishment!
No thank you

She used to be my idol back in the 80's but she lost that beautiful voice she once had, now her voice is nasal and so annoying I can't stand it! Is like she's trying to make that voice, on purpose, God knows why! cause is so ugly, why would she want to do that?
She went too crazy with her third album and that's what killed her career, sorry, hope the best for you but stop making that horrible voice!!
What a great surprise!

I was and remain a HUGE Deb fan from the 80's/90's & early 2000's. Along with Tiffany, NKOTB, Martika & Tracie Spencer- Deb was a teen phenomena. That was then, this is now. Starting about 5 - 6 years ago, Deb lost her voice. She can still sing mind you but the voice that launched her career, million of worldwide album sales and made her famous is gone. Listen to her original versions of "Only in My Dreams" & "Lost in Your Eyes" for example. Then listen to her newly recorded versions. Her voice is grating, nasal, screechy and flat out annoying. She cannot hit the notes as she once did. Basically it makes me cringe in horror as the Deb that we once knew is no more. This song here was-shockingly-on the short list for Best Original Song from last years Oscars. It ulitmately did not make the final list. The lyrics are inspiring and given the context of the documentary it was born from- even more so. If you want to hear a decent recording of Deb recently- check out "Snakecharmer" here on iTunes. The musical arrangement and beats over shadow her vocal shortcomings. So sad to hear a once very talented singer lose their talent.
