Known mostly for his film soundtracks in Europe and the USA, you could be forgiven if you don't know Preisner's three forays into concert music. This work, written in response to the death of his friend and director K. Kieslowski and was his first concert work. Built in two parts- death and then Life, the former is rooted in the traditional Latin requiem mass, the latter leaning on an affirmation of the living. This piece was very well received. Unfortunately the destiny for film composers who are not connected in the concert world is that their works aren't performed frequently. Preisner's requiem has been done from time to time, but it deserves more. I can't say for sure, but I'm guessing this is just a re-release of the original Erato release. In any case, it's a beautiful piece, highly recommended. And while you are at it, check out his 10 Easy Pieces for Piano. Less recommended is his Silence, Night, and Dreams.
