This massive, 5 disc, 104-song collection contains much of one of America’s greatest performers essential recordings, and therefore some of America’s greatest music. Johnny Cash’s covers of country music traditionals paint a pretty clear picture of how well immersed he was in American culture and music, and I cannot help but admire that quality about him being a history buff myself. I listen to these 104 songs shuffled amongst my extreme death/black metal and various musics and after I do my hatred of modern country gets sweltered to the point of swelling. Where’s the humor? Where’s the tradition? Why moronic lyrics? Why beer and trucks and girls with tight jeans?
