  • amazing and vital performances

Even if you have a million other recordings of these sonatas, these are a must listen. I never really warmed to Serkin’s later performances of Beethoven’s sonatas (his recordings of Mozart concertos with Szell is essential though) as I felt he was a little ponderous. These earlier recordings though are fiery and full of interpretive insight. Go for it. You will not be disappointed. The fact that it is mono is a non-issue.
