For this record, star bassist Omer Avital surrounds himself with 4 of the most influential and individual Gotham musicians of his generation - trumpeter Avishai Cohen, tenor and soprano saxophonist Joel Frahm, pianist Jason Lindner, and drummer Jonathan Blake. As individuals, they have performed with acts as diverse as Brad Mehldau, Bobby Hutcherson's SFJAZZ Collective, Me'shell Ndegeocello, McCoy Tyner, Lee Konitz, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Chick Corea, Lauryn Hill, Elvin Jones, John Scofield, Wynton Marsalis, Roy Hargrove, and Dr. Lonnie Smith. Together they provide a reflexive foil for the rooted, yet explorative rnb-worldbeat-freebop-jazz envisioned by Avital. The program takes the listener from straight ahead, to gospel, to free improvisation, to wholly rubato solo sections. The leader shows his diversity of influence on tracks like "(Just Some) Small Time S**t", which smacks of indie rock, as well as "D Bass", on which his solo introduction is reminiscent of the Gnawa music of Northwestern Africa. And he kills all of it! Truly a rare find.
