Reviews

  • Jackson Browne and David Lindley - Priceless!!!

Whoever wrote the "review" for iTunes needs to have their head examined... claiming that Jackson has "struggled in the past few decades with his songwriting..." Seriously? Are you that out of touch??? Jackson hasn't struggled with his songwriting, radio has become a worthless entity, either playing nothing but "classics" or new bands that don't deserve to be on the radio to begin with! Jackson Browne has continued to write great songs and continued to play those great songs for millions of people! I rarely write reviews on iTunes, but the opening line of the iTunes review really ticked me off, so I had to retort! This is a great album with two of music's greatest musicians. Jasckson Browne with David Lindley... you can't go wrong!!!

I agree this is an album for "hardcore" fans....I like the intros...I like hearing Jackson share his gig. David Lindley is a soul mate and friend of Jacksons and I love to hear the blends....anything they do....I grew up with this and look forward to continuing the cause by buying more and more....bring it on.. I haven't listened to Jackson Browne since my college days, decades ago but thought I'd give this a try, and I am so glad I did. This is a truly outstanding and enjoyable recording.

I have to start with asking who wrote the iTunes review? "While Jackson Browne has struggled in the past few decades with his songwriting..."? Seriously? So, everything since Doctor My Eyes, or what? OK, had to get that out of the way. That being said, I love this album, even though, as EVERYONE has written, I'm not buying the intro's for .99 each. Some great selections and all given a different flavor not only with the acoustic setting but with local musicians sitting in as well. And Lindley! What can you say about Lindley... He just makes such an amazing difference here. Don't know what that Bouzouki/mandolin/lute looking thing he's holding on the cover is (anyone?), but I sure liked listening to it! I have to say my two favorites here are Crow On The Cradle - I heard him do that with Graham Nash at the No Nukes concert way back in '79 and haven't heard it since - and, oddly enough, Mercury Blues, just 'cause it was fun, but there are no bad tracks on here. Looking East is amazing, Call It A Loan is outstanding. Love David's fiddle on Take it Easy (Wonder if they ever found the Mandarin Chinese version he talks about on Solo Acoustic...) and These Days was just beautiful. Anyway, for a Jackson Browne fan this is a must have.
  • Unbelievable virtuosity

Well, how do your rate an album that is so uniquely original yet at the same time is filled with classics? That Browne and Lindley can completely reinterpret these songs while keeping them alive and so real is a tribute to their virtuosity. I think this album was possible because of it being recorded live in Spain: European music audiences are *very* serious listeners, no moshpits, shoutouts, or whistling during songs there! With such a captive audience artists like Browne and Lindley can take off into the musical stratosphere and give us sublime music. Hats off to the Spanish audience in attendance, to the musicians on stage, and to the sound production team that captured this event. Oh, and in spite of the familiar tunes be ready for a very different Jackson Browne here, one that is at the top of his game!

I first saw Jackson Browne at the Santa Monica Civic when I was barely 19 or 20. I fell in love with his music then, and at 57 years old now, I find this album beautiful, honest and a treasure. The gift of Jackson and David together live, acoustic, and doing a concert they obviously care about is what it is all about for me. If you are a true fan, you will be moved.

'While Jackson Browne has struggled with his songwriting in the past few decades' What the heck does that mean? What a strange back handed complment. His last album TIME THE CONQUEROR is AWESOME and has amazing songs on it. How about I'm ALIVE? Are you serious??? Get a grip Itunes.. this album is great as well. Unique. But it, you won't regret it.

I have been a devoted JB fan for nearly 40 years now, this version of Late For The Sky is so emotionally honest in the vocal delivery and beautifully composed both in piano and guitar with DL. (in my opinion)--its the first version that has ever come close the the hauntingly effective original. the 30 second preview wont do it justice-- If you buy no other song, you must have this one. I also purchased Call It A Loan, I'm ALive, For Everyman, and For Taking The Trouble. They are quite enjoyable in their newer style with the guitars but I have to say I prefer the original vocals/versions on those....(I'm Alive is really enjoyable with the new guitar arrangements)...and while I would prefer new material from Jackson again very soon, I'm grateful to have these updated versions to add to my collection, particularly Late For The Sky.
  • great songs but lacking Wally Ingram

This is a great collection of songs but the album lacks the outstanding drumming of Wally Ingram that used to bring it all together for both these artist. David Lindley is still a great act by himself as is Jackson Browne but if you have ever seen them with drummer Wally Ingram (the Wally Llama) you know that he makes them both shine. Find the older albums with David and Wally and check them out, you wont be disappointed.
