    A lot of music for the money. Liked the second symphony the best, which isn't played much. Tempo at the end of the fourth and sixth too fast and frantic for my taste. Gold standard for sixth symphony is still Eugene Ormandy recording from the 60's with Philadelphia Orchestra. All in all, however, this a good value.

  • Okay album, considering the price

    Satellite Guy was right on the money, Symph. 4 and 6 are so loud and brassy at parts, I deleted them. The balance of the album is fairly decent considering the price. But gees, why did they ruin it with such a loud brass section!!!!

    I EFFING LOVE THIS LAST MOVEMENT..IT MAKES ME WANT TO LOVE MY BOYFRIEND AND KISS AND HUG HIM but then it makes me depressed cause of the miserably amaazing but miserable ending...

  • A Fantastic Bargain, But . . .

    I've listened to Tchaikovsky's music since I was a kid. I love everything he wrote. I have several of his symphonies on disk or in iTunes but not a complete set. So when I went looking for "The Little Russian" (Sym #2), which I recently heard on our local classical station, I found this album. When I saw 27 songs for only $5.99 I said "wow" to myself and immediately downloaded the album. While listening to each symphony however, I realize once again, you get what you pay for. My overall impression is that the sound is very "thin" as opposed to sounding "rich and full" as I expect from Tchaikovsky. There are probably two reasons for this: (1) the Utah Symphony may have fewer musicians (thus less "richness") than more renowned orchestras, especially in the strings and brass sections or (2) the recording was not made under ideal conditions with the best equipment, location and technical personnel available. That said, the album is still listenable and certainly remains a serious bargain!

  • Amazing collection for an unbelievable price, but VERY far from a top-notch performance

    Don't get me wrong, I was amazed that one could buy the COMPLETE Tchaikovsky Symphonies + Romeo & Juliet + the 1812 Overture for $5.99, that and the fact that Tchaikovsky was a master warrants at least 3 stars. However, after buying the collection and looking at the all the 5-star reviews with people saying "Amazing performance," I felt I had to write a review. If you are not a classical music connoisseur at all and simply want to hear what the music is like, by all means buy it; it's a great deal. But I have to at least give a warning to those who are familiar with the music; it gets butchered by a cacophonous brass section; this is especially evident in Symphonies 4 and 6 where it is almost unlistenable. I guess you get what you pay for when you buy bargain bin collections like this, but if you would like to hear how Symphonies 4-6 should sound in the hands of an able Orchestra, purchase the Berliner Philharmoniker with Karajan conducting them. I would ask anyone who gave this Utah Symphony Orchestra a 5 star review to compare it to that recording. But for $5.99 you can't really go wrong, and I guess I should've known that quality would be sacrificed for quantity at such a price.

    I just downloaded this CD and it is amazing! From my Yoga to drifting off to sleep...I just love it! Thr Romeo & Juliet Overture is 19 enjoyable minutes! What a great value!

    Well done!! It is not often when you get the right collection of classical pieces compiled on one album/cd. This collection of Tchaikovsky, for even the newbie classical lover, is a beautiful set of music. Very nice.

    The impressive recordings of Maurice Abravanel and the Utah Symphony deliver a divine balance and marvelous sound of Tchaikovsky. The orchestra’s poise and the conductor’s vision is an absolute magical experience. What a wonderful completion of Tchaikovsky at an unbelievable price!

    This is a fine example of an outstanding orchestra; this album blew me away, it really takes you to a different dimmension when you listen to it in sorround sound, big difference. I spend never ending nights studying and listening to classical music, this is definitely and album that I'll keep in my top 5 favorites! cannot wait to see this orchestra live. Hope they come to my town.
