Back when I was purchasing vinyl more often than I probably should have, I came across a local comic book store that would house anonymous bootleg recordings of the Dead. These were often a gamble because you never really knew the quality of what you’d get in either the performance or the recording quality. Anyway, one that I purchased and loved for years was a bootleg version of the acoustic portion of this show. Fast forward to listening to this volume of Dicks Picks, and I have the OMG moment! I’ve heard this before on a bootleg copy from back in the day! This is why I’m so fond of this volume!

As everyone is pointing out, this is an interesting show in being half acoustic. In the acoustic half it’s like the “Bluegrass Dead.” So feels quirky but worthwhile. The rare “Crystal Envelopment” parts 1 & 2 is my fav. Also a really good St Stephen.

Wow! Almost equivalent to 2 different shows rolled into one. Love the acoustic (showcasing pure genius) leading into some of the best Electric DEAD I have ever heard! Worthy of any collection, especially those just getting into the DEAD!!!!

Hard to express how coherent and well-performed this show was. Those lucky persons who got to see this LIVE must have been blown away! Did they suspect they were in for a night of incredible music? I think this is the best Dead show of all.
  • HALF ACOUSTIC, BUILDING UP TO 2 ELECTRIC SETS

Dicks pick # 8 is unique for it's half acoustic show, considered by many as their best live recording. The band lineup includes Pig Pen and Mickey Hart. This original three cd set starts with acoustic folk covers and material from American Beauty and Workingman's Dead. You can't help but wanting to sing along, as these versions have good crowd participation and are beautifully done. It changes into two electric sets around "The Cryptical Envelopment" which leads into an awesome version of "Cosmic Charlie". The song "Viola Lee Blues" is one of the best versions out there. Defiantly an essential recording.
