While Myung-Whun Chung's recent CSO release of Shostakovich's fifth comes close to equalling this rendition, no other recording has ever been nearly as amazing as this production. It's so good it's a sheer pleasure to listen to from beginning to end. This is an LP transfer and the performers - Yevgeni Mravinsky was the conductor at the work's premier. Part of the reason why it is so good is Mravinsky seems to think that Shostakovich meant to write a stunning D major conclusion. Rostropovich and many others decided that his tortured state of mind at the time of composing meant that his happy ending had to be false and should remain totured. Not so! If a composer writes a score, that composer knows what he/she wants. And Mravinsky is the only conductor to recognize this. It also has the best sound of any recording - although a few loud coughs will deter some. A simply great performance!
