  • My favorite Genesis album

Nursery Cryme is my favorite Genesis album and the only album where I like each song. I have to admit that I did not immediately take to this album; I had only heard And Then There Were Three before hearing Nursery Cryme and the two albums cannot be more different than each other. This album quickly grew on me, though. I love the music and lyrics and adore the cover. The second heavy instrumental break in The Musical Box is my favorite part of any Genesis song. I also love two of the shortest songs, For Absent Friends and the silly but catchy Harold The Barrel. Great album, from start to finish.

the highlight for me is Return of the Giant Hogweed. put on your headphones and listen to this song a few times. it is a true progressive rock masterpiece. fountain isnt bad either.

Grew up listening to all of the Peter Gabriel era Genesis on vinyl. Amazing stuff, but the iTunes downloads are horrible - dynamic-range-compressed into unlistenability.

Their first effort with Hacket and Collins. The playing is signficantly better, as is the song writing. The beginning of a series of superb efforts by the band right through Wind and Whuthering after which they took a tumble in my opinion. It is a shame that i-Tunes cannot work a deal to get The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. I have never understood that.

With Hacket and Collins in the band, Genesis were on their way but this is still a formative effort. The Musical Box is a classic prog tune, and there's a few other good songs on the album as well. It just doesn't stand up to the next four albums that would follow but worth the time if you like the genre.

It's so refreshing to hear this mix after having to listen to the murky production of the original for so many years. Everything is so crisp and clear now. The vocals are different in some spots, but they still sound quintessentially Gabriel/Collins. A very underrated album, I might add. Every critic who reviewed this album initially way back in 1971 (45 years ago!) should listen to this mix and reevaluate their critiques, because it's almost like hearing it in the studio brand new for the very first time. Bravo, Nick Davis, for remixing this and Foxtrot. Selling England and The Lamb didn't need any tinkering, but the other two certainly did. Well done

This album gets a 4.5 from me. Collins and Hackett, better musicians than their predecessors, are amazing, especially Hackett's work on The Musical Box and Fountain of Salmacis. TMB is one of my fav songs: it slowly builds up to great organ and guitar solos, and the end is one of the best lyrical sections ever: great story😀. For Absent Friends is interesting, Collins' first lead vocal, while The Return of the Giant Hogweed is outstanding. Harold The Barrel is funny, Seven Stones and Harlequin pretty average 1971 Genesis. The closer, Salmacis, is incredible. a must for all Proggies!
  • Fantastic classic Genesis debut

This album was the debut album of the classic 5-piece era of Genesis, and considering the new blood in the band, it ended up being a great record. it starts out with 'Musical Box' a classic piece from the era with lyrics by Peter Gabriel. Starting with chiming 12-string guitar from Mike Rutherford, it goes through a series of moods and atmospheres before ending with an all-out rockfest over which Peter does the famous 'now!' shout. The album ends on a strong piece as well. 'Fountain Of Salmacis' is a very atmospheric Tony Banks driven piece telling the story of Hermaphroditus and the fountain of youth. This song was the first to bring forth Genesis' famous Mellotron sound and has some excellent guitar work by Steve Hackett. The middle of the album isn't bad, although not nearly as strong as the beginning or the end. 'For Absent Friends', a Steve Hackett piece with Phil making his vocal debut is not a high point by any means, and 'Harlequin', a duet with Peter and Phil, sounds rather inconsequential. 'Hogweed' and 'Seven Stones' seem to drag sometimes. 'Harold The Barrel' though is good fun, comical song that seems to foreshadow some of the lighter pieces the band did later on, but is musically strong.
