Needs to try something new

I love Tracy Chapman, but she has such a unique voice that it makes a lot of her songs sound repetitive. She needs to take some chances, sing a duet, try some rock, try country, something. I'm not saying she can't write lyrics. And its not just her, a lot of singer/songwriters have the same problem.
Stunning!

Simply amazed at the thoughts in her head. So glad she can get them on paper and out to the world which is in despreate need of these observations. There is no truer writter than Tracy Chapman and it's such a shame that shes barley gotten recogniztion with the exception of her first CD and of course 'Give Me One Reason'. She is way more than thse 2. This perticular CD is a favorite of mine from the title track to the truthful 'All That You Have Is Your Soul', such a statement. 'Freedom Now' is another highlight as is 'Careful of My Heart' and 'Subcity'. My favorite out of these 10 tracks is 'Bridges'. Check this out and be sure to click buy.

It does not "fall short of the stunning excellence of her debut". They must be confusing it with "Matters of the Heart" (the next one) which falls short of the stunning brilliance of this one! It's arguably her best. Bridges, Subcity, Freedom Now and Material World are all masterpieces. I wish Tracy would make another album as good as this! I'd give it 4 and a half if I could. The only regret is that at 10 tracks, it's too short.

I remember this album from my childhood, when I stumbled on it along with other treasures such as Dylan's Desire and Paul Simon's debut solo album.
This album is gorgeous, soulful, spiritual, and utterly genuine. Her voice is a unique baritone that reminds me of Nina Simone. Kind of like Nina Simone's voice with the songwriting of Joni Mitchell on Blue.
It's great to reacquaint myself with this classic.
Voice you don't forget

I remember when I was little my dad listened to this album a lot. Although I'm just a teenager now and I'm "supposed to" listen to Katy Perry and stuff, I just can't help it but go back Tracy Chapman. I guess her voice is the kind that you don't forget.
This Time

This time is by far Tracy's best song. That song and many others on this album got me through a tough divorce! I hope that everyone that is a Tracy Chapman fan has a chance to listen to this entire song. It's very powerful.

"Crossroads" is not Tracy Chapman's classic debut but it can stand up against that album just as strong. This album has some of Tracy's most intimate and passionate songs of her career. "This Time" and "Be Careful of My Heart" are the soundtrack of a heartbroken Friday night- hurt, strong and angry, all at the same time. The melancholy "Bridges" is the showpiece of this set- a song with insightful lyrics and an overall feel that will drive you to drink.
All songs on "Crossroads" stand alone as good songs. The set is not as cohesive as her debut but a nice batch of songs from a genius songwriter.
