  • Won't go without

Even though I'm a big TR fan, I was at feeling lukewarm about this album at first. The more I listened to it, the more it grew on me, and now I can't see my collection without each and every tune.
  • Double Album Now Digital

I had this double album when it first came out in 1982. Glad to now have it again digitally. Filled with catchy melodies and memorable choruses, this album is one of my favorite, and most underrated, albums by Utopia.

Released in 1982, this should’ve been up there in the same rarified air as records by Squeeze, Joe Jackson, Elvis Costello and The Cars. Perfect pop songs throughout!

Wonderful ear candy from a guy and group that knew how to do this well. But what the hell is (Calling out Trimble)? That is not the title of that song.

This is the album that woke me up to Todd and his wild, meandering musical career. I picked it up because I had heard "Hammer in my Heart" and the rest of the songs were equally as strong. I was a heavy metal kid, but Todd was about to stretch my listening range, as I began to pick up his earlier material album by album. This record still shines like a beacon, with tight arrangements, razor-sharp production and a "mainstream" feel that doesn't exist in most of Todd or Utopia's other works. The lyrics still retain some of Todd's signature introspection, but from a much more upbeat standpoint than most of his other collections. This album is a great audio journey from beginning to end and back again. Definitely worth a purchase. It will be in rotation on your music device until you die.
  • A True Group Effort

Democracy in action. Yes, it's Todd's group. Yes, Todd engineered and produced it. But this is truly a group effort. Lead vocals and composer duties are shared almost equally along side Todd. 15 three minute power-pop/new wave songs and not a bad one in sight. Kasim has lead vocals on three songs, Willie on two, Roger on Two, Todd on three, and Todd and Kasim share lead on four of them. Starts off with Libertinefeaturing Kasim on lead vocals. One of his best vocals ever and the song is a flat out rocker. Roger has the great keyboard solo that you would swear was Todd on guitar. Feet Don't Fail Me Now was their "hit" off this album and an accompanying video was on MTV for a little while. Roger does lead vocals on this tight keyboard driven Beatle-esque song. Neck On Upand Princess Of The Universeare two flat out rockers sung by Willie. Princess is one of the best songs/vocal on the entire album. I'm Looking At You But I'm Talking To Myselfis a typical Todd ballad, ala Compassion. It's a great song but sounds like it belongs more on one of Todd's solo albums. Hammer In My Hearthas Todd taking on lead vocals on a great shouting rocker. I believe he might have shred a vocal chord or two while recording this. Infrared and Ultravioletis a minor trip into psychedelia, with a little backwards guitar thrown in for good measure. Say Yeahand Chapter and Verseare both power-pop rock songs ala Badfinger/Big Star. Musicianship and production are simply outstanding. The band sounds tighter than it's ever sounded before, or after. That there was this great of a rocking album out there in 1982 and it went virtually unnoticed, should be a crime.

In the days of vinyl this was a "3-sided" record (2 LP set, one LP with the same songs on both sides). A lot of music for the money, infectious, uncomplicated, and under appreciated by the record-buying public. This collection showcases Todd Rundgren's band mates, who take turns on lead vocals in addition to Runt himself. Not quite the Beatles but add this to your collection if you like that brand of bright pop melodies and harmonies in your rock and roll.

These were the songs and this was the record that first got me into Todd. That was thirty years ago. This record is so unbelievably strong that looking back it's almost inconceivable that it wasn't a blockbuster.

Glad to see this LP finally available. Feet Don't Fail Me Now had quite a good chunk of airplay on early MTV, back when it WAS MTV. Anyway, that song is pure pop genius, as are the hidden gems "Libertine", and "Say Yeah". All four guys lay it down like real pros, which shows how loaded this band was. They might have been into prog earlier but they made a smooth transition into simpler, catchy tunes. Too bad they never got the recognition they deserved. If you like early 80s guitar pop meets synth new wave, this is a great one to have.
