Margaret Whiting, Helen Forrest and Helen O'Connell all were major band-singers in the 1940s, and in Whiting's case, a major solo artist into the '50s. They re-recorded their hits and other standards for Reader's Digest later in their careers. Lots of people don't know it, but Reader's Digest's Music Division is a big player in the direct mail industry, selling millions of box sets over the years. They're known for quality -- and these are quality recordings indeed! An inside source at RD told me the Whiting recordings are from 1980. She sounds great in my opinion. The Helen Forrest tracks are from the early '70s. And Helen O'Connell reprises her big hits with Jimmy Dorsey, "Green Eyes" and "Amapola," in recordings from 1969. No, I did not accept money or a bribe for this review. Give a listen and I think you'll agree that there's an awful lot to like in these tracks.
