  • Essential. Absolute must.

Disregard the Seefeel comparisons. Seefeel never recorded anything as smooth or refined, and substantial as this ep. If you don't own the 2-cd re-release of Souvlaki, which contains all of these tracks among others (highly recommended) then download this immediately. Btw, the US version of Souvlaki does contain some extra tracks, but the sound is INFERIOR. If you care about that kind of thing. The only additional track you've got to get is Some Velvet Morning, which should be included here - even though it wasn't on the orig cd. That too, is an absolute must.
  • Turning Point in This Inflential Band's Career

This was the point in Slowdive's career (toward the end it turned out unfortunately) where they veered off the path of the textbook shoegazer band, and morphed into something more, becoming one of the first rock/ambient/electronic hybrids that would pave the way for artists like Boards of Canada, Global Communication, and Ulrich Schnauss. What resulted truly stands the test of time. It's unfortunate Creation Records threatened the band with a contract release if their next album, Pygmalion sold poorly. Pygmalion of course, became the band's masterpiece, expanding on the ambient/rock format even further, and becoming an out of print collector's item for years until it's rerelease. Both are highly recommended.

Along with the simultaneously released In Mind remix EP, this brief snapshot into Slowdive musical history was dismissed as a Seefeel ripoff and an attempt to cash in on the burgeoning 'electronic' music scene. It didn't take many listens to see that as a sort of hysterical condemnation at the time, and even less so now as this EP, in my opinion, has held up quite well. Certainly is not the Slowdive that everyone thinks of at mere mention of the shoegaze genre, but is really quite an engaging composition nonetheless. Above all else, listen to the achingly plaintive Country Rain which showcases Rachel Goswell in full-swing awesomeness for one of the last times on a Slowdive recording.
