While there is obviously no such thing as the "definitive" recording of the Beethoven piano sonatas, the cycle done by Paul Lewis is to my ear one of the absolute best. I have heard dozens of records by the likes of Schnabel, Brendel, Rubinstein, etc. Paul Lewis captures the range of magnificence in these sonatas. His recordings of the last three sonatas is breathtaking. If I were marooned on a desert island with the choice of one set of the Beethoven sonatas, this would be the set I would request.

I'm not a musician. As a listener, I have heard several versions of Beethoven's "Moonlight" sonatas. His are excellent. His playing is masterful precision, and the music effortlessly come to life. The result is that these sonatas are as relevant today as they were 200 years ago.

Brilliant! Heard him for the first time in Chicago (10/21/07) with the London orchestra. His performance of a Beethoven sonata was inspiring and an unforgetable experience.
