Peter Pan (Original 1954 Broadway Cast Recording)

Peter Pan is my absolute favorite musical! Every time I went to my Grandma's house, I would watch her recording of Mary Martin as Peter Pan. Now as a teen, I can truly appreciate the beauty and hope in this fantastic score. This is love, hope, faith, and fairy dust all rolled into one. Don't hesitate to buy it!

This has always been my favorite Version of Peter Pan. I just love Mary Martin's voice and i love the pure bliss i get everytime i hear one of these songs. Yes I love the Disney one but it just dosen't campare to the wonderfulness of Mary Martin.

For many years I watched Miss Martin fly the Darling children to Never Land every year on NBC. It was as much a part of my childhood as "Wizard of Oz", Rogers and Hamerstein's "Cinderella" (with Leslie Ann Warren), Rudolph the Red Nosed Raindeer and Charlie Brown. I was lucky enough to actually meet Miss Martin, who has made me believe even more that I truly have been to Never Land myself even if I did not fly there on pixie or fairy dust. She was warm and wonderful and made a very awkward 18 year old know that she would never, ever grow up. That was nearly 30 years ago. There have many musical version of Barrie's immortal tale. Leonard Burnstein, this one, Disney and a version done in the late 1970's early 1980's starring Mia Farrow. Because Miss Martin's version was so popular, Disney told his song writer's he did not want to duplicate any of the songs. I've heard a version of "I'm Flying" mixed with "You Can Fly" from Disney's. It makes for a fun song. But this is the original cast. I know there is a more recent one of the same score, but none can match the wonderful joy and freedom felt from this cast. I saw Sandy Duncan perform the title role on Broadway, but she did not have any of the joy, wonder and impishness that Miss Martin had. Miss Martin made me believe in Peter and I still do.

Just absolutely fabulous - a treasure for many years and many years to come.

I'm a huge fan of musical theatre and Peter Pan. My grandma had the tape of the performance with Mary Martin and Cyril Ritchard and I used to watch it everyday when I went over to her house. I found it the other day and watched it for the first time in years. I immediately checked itunes and I'm so glad they had this album. It's absolutely amazing! Perfect for any musical theatre fan and anyone will "never grow up".

My parents taped this for me when I was 4. I will never get sick of hearing these songs. They make me feel like a kid again! =)

I love Peter Pan...It was our school's musical this year...Oh, My Mysterious Lady is one of my favorite songs...Suprisingly, I liked the version one of my cast members did this year much more than in this recording...

Peter Pan has had a somewhat confusing pedigree as a musical. There are no less than three different versions--the lovely but little-heard Leonard Bernstein score, the Disney movie and this unforgetable Brodway version from 1954. This was originally a "limited" engagement live on Broadway, as Mary Martin had other commitments, but it was adapted for tv by NBC and ran annually for many years. Indeed as the original broadcast version wore out (pre-quality video tape and "worse", black and white) NBC retaped it twice. Alas the last tv incarnation came after Mary Martin was really too old for flying around on wires. Her voice was strained and that last tv version is almost painful to watch. My folks were kind were kind enough to make this my first live-on-Broadway show--a dream birthday surprise. I still remember the wonders of Martin flying around the stage and I've been haunted by the unforgetable melody of "Never Never Land" ever since. This score is not only tuneful and funny, but often nostalgic and even a bit tinged with sadness. After all Peter can only stay forever in "Never Never Land" by losing his friends who do grow up, get their own lives and can only remember their childhood joys! This is the definitive version of the show. The beauty of Martin's voice, the "evil" verve of Cyril Ritchard's Captain Cook, the wonderful tunes all blend into a perfect show. Highly recommended!
