My first exposure to Calexico was Hot Rail. I instantly loved the combination of rock, southwest/mariachi music. It was a year later before i went back to listen to Spoke and then Black Light. When i see Calexico in concert now (Feast of Wire and Iron & Wine tours) I long for the days of their first albums' sounds. I love their newer stuff too, as these guys are brilliant musicians. but their first few albums are unlike any other music I've heard. Most bands make a hard stop and transition into the next track. This album uses 30-70 second instrumentals as interludes to the following songs. The Black Light is just all about goodness. As I'm writing this, i feel it may not be the best review of the actual sound of their music, but if you're looking for something different, you won't find a better band.

Another amazing offering from Calexico. You can hear the Sonoran Desert in every song! An amazing mix of classic spanish and mexican guitar, with solid lyrics, and the interplay of brass and electric guitar.

I bought this album and not being quite what I expected I listened to part of it and then set it aside. Well a year later I pulled it out and started listening to it and it began to grow on me. Bloodflow and Stray are great numbers. I love this album now.
