  • Second Version of John Passion

An excellent period performance recording of the 1725 version of the St. John Passion. The opening chorus is a different movement (I believe from one of the cantatas) than the usual Herr Unser Herr. There are three new arias in the Italian style that blew my mind. The intermittent chorales have slightly different voice leading from the original, and they all end with minor chords. If you're looking for the original version the Gardiner and Suzuki are the best, but Herrweghe digs deep into the work's rhetoric and gives us the rare chance to hear an intense reading of the score's 2nd version with original instruments.
