Reviews

  • Telling a Story, Not Just Blowing

There are hints of inheritance here - that rich, vocal quality of Metheny's and Abercrombie's work on acoustic steel string- but Moreno is no parrot. Give a listen to the propulsive "Road Song", its unresolved "just over the next hill" attitude, and the majestic "Still Here", its patient tactility. "Gondola", too stood out, Moreno's pensive, swirling hesitation. You can hear him thinking with the instrument, telling a story, not just blowing.

I saw him play at the Blue Note last year in NYC and I still listen to this album. It's very well done and leaves nothing to be desired.

This guy is one of the youngsters that is bringing jazz to the new era. His compositions are beautiful and his understanding of theory is strong. I love the way they play over the changes. You should buy this album for the tunes if nothing else.

Mike Moreno is one of the next up and coming major players in contemporary jazz. This CD illustrates an advanced concept of composition and a fierce improvisational talent. His technique is unique and astounding but while remaining tasteful. All the players on this CD are great; creating a beautiful backdrop for Moreno's soloing. This is where jazz is headed, get it!
