The Incantation and Dance piece is a wonderful, fiery, nicely complicated piece.

Incantation is one of my favorite pieces! It has such a beautiful flow and jumpy sort of rhythm that is an absolute celebration to listen to! The piece is so much fun for me to play on clarinet, and to listen to and take in :)

After playing Incantation and Dance in my high school band, and doing pretty well, I think, these guys just blew us out of the water. They have awesome musicality, and they really captured what John Barnes Chance wanted to do. Great job!

Accurate, musical, true to the composer's intent.
Trying to be impartial, but....

...since I performed and worked behind the scenes on this recording, I'll give it the five stars because I know exactly how much work went into this project, and the care that was taken to follow Mr. Chance's musical intent as closely as possible. Just because other bands have been doing things differently does not make them right or wrong; the goal here was a close interpretation of the original music. This is a reference; feel free to interpret as you see fit.
As for the reviewer who claims his band of freshmen and sophomores played this music better, I'd love to hear it. There just might be some outstanding bands that could surpass this recording, but their directors wouldn't be bragging about it on an iTunes review board. They'd be too busy rehearsing Symphony #2.
Outstanding recording!!!

As a professional classical saxophonist I would say that these recordings are nothing but the best quality. I personally saw Illinois State University play at the National Music Educators Conference in Chicago a couple years ago and their musicality and passion that goes into the music is unparalleled. This recording has been met with the same expectations and there is no other recording in the industry that compares to the quality and precision of Illinois State University's performance.
great resource!

I think this album is a great resource in my work. I believe that Illinois State did complete justice to Chance's work. As to those who think there are better recordings out there: The truth is, there is a real lack of recordings of Chance's music and this ensemble did a great job filling that void. This would be a great addition to anyone's library of band music. In regards to the hemiola in the 4th movement of Korean Folk Song: Almost every band in the world is guilty of turning the triplets into two 16ths and an 8th causing the triple and duple to "line up" on the second half of the beat INCORRECTLY. If you hear this piece played as it's SUPPOSED to be played, it might sound wrong to some but it is actually technically correct and true to Chance's compositional intent. This group got it right!
