Perhaps on the fence about buying this one - buy it. Fantastic score, Barry at his best. I've been a Barry fan most of my life - Scarlet Letter, Somewhere in Time, Indecent Proposal among my favorites - and the only scores of his I don't buy or listen to are the up-tempo action pieces, e.g., Specialist, most of the Bond stuff, Mercury Rising, Black Hole, etc. High Road to China is one of the few of his scores I had never heard before; I'd actually forgotten he'd even scored it. So glad I discovered this! I've listened to it repeatedly for the last 3 nights. 'Farewell to Struts' alone is worth the price. Heartbreaking, to think his composing days have virtually ended. We'll always have his music though.

I have been a John Barry fan since the '60s, starting with the Bond series, but expanding to include King Rat, The Ipcress File, The Knack, Born Free, The Lion in Winter, The Last Valley, etc. His score for High Road to China is in his finest romantic adventure style, an overlooked score that deserves more recognition. If you liked Out of Africa, Born Free or The Last Valley, this is one you should not miss.
