Definitely a step in the right direction for Benny. It has none of the overwrought vocals or campy lyrics like in Beautiful Things. It manages to carry a fun dance-beat under it while maintaining a rock edge, and it doesn’t have that much of the “start soft, get loud” structure that every other Benson Boone song has. Its subject matter is very interesting and vague enough to be relatable, but it’s also very linear (what happened next, Benny?) Diary-entry-style songwriting like this is a pet peeve of mine, but its structure makes it passable.
Not something I found immediately fun, but in the end, not bad at all.
