The cover photo is of Theda Bara, the orignal "vamp", (short for vampire, not the mythical creature, but rather a femme fatale). She starred in the 1917 silent film "Cleopatra" which cost an astounding $500,000 at the time. She became what was probably the first "movie starlet", receiving thousands of letters from men begging her to marry them. A man murdered his wife by throwing her out of a multi-story window, claiming he went crazy after seeing one of her films. Of the original 120 minutes of movie runtime, sadly less than one minute of the film has been recovered. She died in 1955.
