When this album was release was under fire, poor reviews and a lot of criticism, but still not even one of those critics talk about the music in this album, but rather if Vai did the right choice after playing guitar for David Lee Roth.Vai was instrumental after Roth, then he decide it to make a band with a lead singer. The critics were thinkin Sex & Religion was an atemp to make a record Roth style, but the record turn out to be a little metal for their taste. But truth to be told, this album is awesome, songs like 'Pig' and 'Here & Now' are great guitar riffs with amazing vocals and the metal element to make it sound 'hardcore','In My Dreams With You' is another great song which it was the very first single to be release from this album, 'Survival' is another great well writen song with an awesome chorus and face melting solo.Still Vai have his instrumental songs too, like 'Touching Tongues'.Great album, but no fan base.

I bought this album after reading some of the reviews, thinking that some people where just being overly-harsh and I feel more validated in that opinion than ever. The album does take some adjusting too but once you get through it you can grow to truly love this album for the incredible work that it is. Steve and Devin made an amazing team on this and should at least be given a chance.
  • Took some time to like it, about 9 years.

Ok, I bought this album back in 2000 and thought it was just awful. I originally purchased Passion and Warfare and Fire Garden and thought both were absolutely amazing. A few weeks later I bought this album and couldn't believe what the heck I was listening too. Needless to say, I placed this CD on the shelf where it remained for 9 years. Well, I've picked it up again and gave it another listen and have a completely different opinion. Not only is the music unique and memorable, but Devan Townsand has some of the most powerful vocals I've ever heard. In other words, this album is very very different from almost anything else you will ever hear. I still have no clue what many of the songs are actually about and the lyrics are quite weird, but if you give it a chance, it'll grow on you. It only took 9 years for me.

This album gets harsh reviews; even Steve seems torn up about it on his Web site, but the creativity, depth and emotion are all hallmark Vai. Nothing I've heard comes anywhere close to this music. It's heavy, it's complex and, at times, moving. The musicianship is unbeatable and Vai truly found his vocalist equivalent in Devin Townsend. This is the soundtrack of the Warrior Poet. It's uniquely Steve Vai and is one of my all-time favorites.
  • It's unbelievable that Steve Vai was in such a band.

Steve Vai's guitar playing in some songs in this album is recognizable as his. So, be ready and listen to his work from years earlier, even if the lyrics doesn't have something to do with you.

I have heard from many fans of Steve Vai that this is one of his weakest albums. That might be true. I myself only got this particular album because it was the first to display Devin Townsend and his amazing talents. Anyone who's a fan of Devin's solo work will definitely want to pick up this album. The mix blends well with Devin's vocals and Vai's incredible guitar work. This is not an album for pure shred fans, but it's still amazing.

I am a hardcore Vai fan. I love this album. I think that it touches on the major themes that Vai tries to explore in his music and his vocalist's efforts were supreme. This is perhaps my favorite of his work. This album is so much MORE than just guitar work. Great guitarists can shred - iTunes is loaded with them. Few can express such deep ideas so powerfully. This is a thinking person's album, no doubt. =)

It took me a few years to really get into this album, but now I love it. Some of the most intense religious experiences I have ever had occurred when I was listening to it. Musically this covers everything from AOR arena rock, metal shred, ballads, industrial, and totally experimental. My personal favorite is the odd "Deep Down Into the Pain" which begins as a metal screamer and evolves into a dream in which the protagonist meets God.
