When I 1st heard the name Toby Lightman at the music company I used to work for, I thought: 'Male country singer'. Then I saw the album cover & thought: 'Female country singer'. Not really being into country music I ignored the album for a while, then I kept seeing it @ Target & other stores I went to, so I decided to listen to snipets of it, and WOW!!! NOT COUNTRY MUSIC!
I guess the best category to fit this in is Alternative/Blues... And Toby is full of that bluesy, soul!!! And what a beautiful voice! I think I listened to the entire album twice in a row the 1st time I heard it, then once a day everyday after for a while. I wanted to find her at the House of Blues so I could propose to her (haha)!.. But seriously, if you like alternative soul, you should love this!
Turned My Musical Taste Upside Down

I was apprehensive to listen to this at first;because my friend told me it was a little country. I grew up around *my dog died and my wife left* country music, but I give everything at least one chance. I LOVE Toby, she is really an undefineable artist and so fresh compared to much of the music available. I have loved Adele since day 1, and will always love her, but Toby is much more elusive and when I try to sing a part of her song, I don't get a 10 person chorus because EVERYONE know the words to Someone Like You.I have yet to return the CD to my friend because its my go to music when I am driving to class or somwhere I am not uber excited about. Great songs.

I love this album. Toby has kind of a Bonnie Ratte/Norah Jones kind of feel to her voice. It's beautiful! I saw her in concert at Mohegan Sun and fell in love with her sound!
Five stars!

I saw Toby as an opening act for Marc Broussard and I was floored. As a part of a "soul" review, she pulled off Chaka Khan and Aretha Franklin with class, grace, and a believable amount of funk. I bought her CD (Bird on a Wire), and was additionally impressed by her songwriting ability. As a songwriter myself, that's a huge compliment. I can't imagine she could write or sing anything that would deter me from being a lifelong fan. She's truly talented. I wish her the best.
Good second album, but that first one...

The first was more raw and hearing her. The second has lots more of a studio sound. Still good for a second album, but if you get one it's got to be the first which is like getting the early Joss Stone stuff. Good sound, but lets get back to the raw, acoustical, hearing her and the lyrics as that is what makes her great, not the music competing with her sound on some songs. Just my thoughts.

I have been waiting for Toby's follow up to "Little Things" which I listened to for almost a month straight. "Bird On the Wire" is just as impressive as "Little Things" if not more so. The first track, "Don't Wake Me" has amazing overlying harmonies which reminded me a little bit of Sweet Honey in the Rock at first, but then she brought in her own signature style which is why I'm sure people listen to her. Her voice is so strong, it has depth and soul that is rarely heard in this type of music. I have to say that if any artist knew exactly how to match her style of music with her voice, it is definitely without a doubt Toby Lightman. My favorite tracks are Don't Let Go, Round & Round, One Sure Thing, Overflowing and Holding Me Down. Don't be fooled though, every track on the CD has redeeming qualities.
