I had never heard of Schipa until I heard an old recording on the radio a couple of weeks ago. I knew some of the tunes from a similar album of Caruso recordings and gave this a listen - I have to say, I prefer Schipas interpretations. His timing, phrasing and clarity make the tunes come alive. He is tasteful - no unnecessary ornamentation or high notes just to impress people. The dynamics and the tempo changes always make sense. You come away humming the tunes and tapping your toes.
