This is not Jazz. Mediocre attempt at funk hip hop ? Just not sure what the intent here is. What is the direction?

This is a different but refreshing and upbeat kind of Kurt Elling album with a consistent jazz-funk sound led by Charlie Hunter--quite a departure from Elling's recent work, which was getting too ponderous for my taste. The trio sounds great, and are really good live (they recently appeared at San Jose Jazz). The lyrics and vocalese are mostly fun to listen to, but I hope Mr. Elling's more traditional jazz fans (and any much younger listeners) aren't too scared by the words to The Seed...In any case, my favorite tracks are Circus and Can't Make it with Your Brain. A London jazz reviewer recently noted a similarity to Steely Dan on tracks such as Dharma Bums. By the same token, This Is How We Do reminds me of The Fez from The Royal Scam album. Not a bad connection to make....Having heard Mel Torme sing Fagen's The Goodbye Look many years ago, I'm now wondering if Mr. Elling (with Charlie Hunter's help) could do something interesting with songs like Home at Last, Kid Charlemagne, and The Nightfly.
