He is incredible! You know he's good if Brecker regarded him as the best tenor player when he was alive. Then you listen and you think holy crap this cat can play!

Recently I decided that my favorite album by Bergonzi was "Just Within". I have been listening to it for a couple years now, and think it is a compositional masterwork. I recently bought "Tenor of the Times", and I have a new favorite! Jerry Bergonzi has been blowing for years, and he shows his maturity in this new release. Tracks like "Cadiz" don't focus on virtuosity and technique, but more on the lyrical and almost voice-like tone which Bergonzi is admired for. But just when the listener is awed by the expressive playing, Bergonzi will whip out a burner like "Skull Shining" and impress all with his instrumental facility and great sense of time. This album is a must buy for any tenor player, jazz composer, or anyone who wants to expose themselves to a legend.

In my short travels I have come across many extremely well known and talented saxophonists, almost all of whom Jerry Bergonzi is their favorite saxophonist! Bergonzi's latest record, Tenor of the Times, is well worth acquiring. Hi sound is distinct and robust, unlike any other saxophonist around. His compositions are particularly enjoyable on this record, using unpredictable techniques and motifs. Not to mention Bergonzi is one of the great improvisers of the Jazz art. Also, for those of us who live in parts where jazz is not well stocked in our record stores, itunes provides an opportunity to own this record.
