Feast Of Wire by Calexico

Tight jams with a competent nod toward melody and songwriting. Kind of wants to be in the background as sound, though.
hot damn!

At their best (and they are very good on Feast of Wire), Calexico sounds as if the Eagles had soaked up the Latin American influences that wash over the Southwest. A great cd to listen as you drive (preferably in the high desert).
Amazing, simply amazing!

this is my first calexico album, i actually heard their song cruel, and decided to check them out. I don't have any problems with this CD. black heart , woven birds, and sunken waltz are the best three songs on the album. I wish I could give the album 6 stars but theres only 5. so heres my 6th star *
good stuff

My first exposure to Calexico is when a friend played me the song "Woven Birds," which is amongst the loveliest things I have ever heard. It is still one of my favorites on this record, but the rest of the tracks stand up favorably well. As a music geek I love all of the thoughtful textures. I am reminded of Talk Talk's "Laughing Stock" in that this is definitely a "studio" album where they have taken advantage of the tools available, but it does not sound over-wrought. For all the instruments and parts I still listen to this and think of real people playing these songs.
Their best so far

This album puts everything together that makes Calexico good. This is a smooth album with lots of high points. Also, the recording quality seemed to be much better for this album. For some reason the sound on their previous efforts never really satisfied me.

Moody, longing music and vocals evocative of a gig in a lonely smokey border bar at 2 a.m. "Pepita" is a delight, as is "Woven Birds." If you like the sound of these pieces, you'll probably enjoy the whole collection. The band gets a "10" for originality--as far as I know, Calexico doesn't sound like anyone else out there. These days, that's a wonder.

The best of all Calexico albums, Feast of Wire reigns in thier sun-saoked, southwest sound with tight production, textured, intricate melodies, and Joey Burns quiet, contemplative vocals. Extraoridanary musicians round out Calexico making the experience like spending the day touring the wild southwest.
