I’ve always heard people talk about how TOOL is the greatest metal band ever, so I decided to check them out. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, but I found this to be unbearable and pretentious. It’s painful to listen to and makes my skin crawl. Plus, TOOL’s fan base pretty much deifies the group as an entity that can do no wrong, it makes me hate TOOL even more.

For what it’s worth, I believe this is the greatest album in the history of heavy music. I bought “Aenima” on the day it was released, & though Tool still creates solid work, this will remain their best composition. This is the perfect union of songwriting, instrumental performance, & production (HUGE thanks to David Bottrill). Every single song on this album (minus the interludes) is a stone cold classic. I could keep going, but I think you get the idea. It doesn’t get better than this

With extended passages, moody sections, and bizarre filler tracks, Ænima is the true birth of the one we call Tool. Opiate had its glorious moments and Undertow had some hints about where they were going, but both were more grunge albums than metal, if only slightly. Ænima on the other hand, is sharper and more daring, which is what we expect from them. Great album, and a great band.
