  • It's good, even if you heard otherwise

I get a kick out of the "experts" who decry this a "pop" record because it does not sound like Gabriel-era Genesis. The fact is, prog was changing, evolving, just as Genesis was. This is a very good follow-up to the first two albums featuring Collins at the mic. I see it as Genesis' last great album. There is a lean to more mainstream material, yes, but the band's prog bona fides remain intact on several tracks. This is a highly underrated album that deserves a second listen from those who have forsaken it through the years.

I respect those here who love pop rock as that's what this album is comprised of. But with the loss of Gabriel and Hackett, Genesis falls of the cliff from Prog Rock Imortality to Pop Rock Mediocraty. Sorry people not having it.
  • The most underrated album in the catalog

Yes it has their first major hit with “Follow You Follow Me” but this is a flawless album that only gets better with each listen. You’ll notice Tony Banks at the forefront here as he takes lead as Mike Rutherford was not quite a lead guitarist yet.

This album was my introduction to Genesis back in ‘78 or ‘79 and it made me want to hear more of their albums. I like the cover and the inside of the gatefold where the lyrics are printed. The album starts off on a very strong note with the aggressive Down and Out, which may be my all time favorite Genesis song. Tony Banks keyboard playing really shines on this, especially during the solo. Undertow is another personal favorite of mine. I love the vocal for it. I actually think Phil Collins hit his peak as a singer here. Ballad of Big is kind of silly but I love the next two songs, Rutherford’s Snowbound and Banks’ Burning Rope. The second half of the album isn’t as strong as the first half but ends on a great note with the catchy Follow You, Follow Me. Great album.

This has to be the best of Genesis. One of the greatest albums ever produced. Sheer perfection. Perfect harmonies, blends old and new Genesis. Sheer genius.
