The remastering and production for these remastered albums is incredible. This set is so spectacular, I think its worth considering the physical copy as well. The packaging, book, photos, liner notes are all well worth it. THIS is great music!

To be sure, the remastering is drop-dead gorgeous. Coltrane’s work sounds crisper and fuller than ever before, besting even the Rudy Van Gelder reissues from a decade or so ago. However, it’s puzzling why record labels don’t just remaster and reissue his entire catalog. Like Impulse’s compilation “Naima,” this collection sounds terrific, but song selection on compilations is the epitome of subjective and all fans are bound to notice a few favorites missing (here, his fantastic “Lush Life” album is only represented by the title track). Still, it’s a great starter for a casual fan and you can’t really argue with legendary music sounding this good over five decades after its release.
