Raw Authenticity

Broken English is one of those uncommon albums that taps a deep vein of raw emotion and channels it into a powerful musical statement. Romantically linked to Mick Jagger in the 60's, but a recording artist in her own right, many do not realize that the early Stones hit "As Tears Go By" was written by Faithfull. Another famous Stones song, Sister Morphine," from "Sticky Fingers" was also penned by her, reflecting her experiences as a homeless heroin addict. After a very long absence, she resurfaced in 1979 with this album, which finally gives voice to her life and experiences. It's an uncompromising, idiosyncratic and captivating listen, exuding the hard-won lessons of a life of struggle, on many levels. There's not a bad song on the entire album, with Broken English,Ballad of Lucy Jordan, Guilt and a cover of Working Class Hero resonating particularly strongly. Once you listen, it will capture you.
