When this album came out I was in high school. Everyone seemed to hate on it except for those who were real deep in Kanye West’s story. I was not. I wondered why people were complaining about this album. It was raw. Kanye West survived a near death experience, lost his Mom and woman. This album bleeds. It weeps. It wasn’t “cool”. It was a sad. It was an expression, true art. Do I like the album? Yes, ish. I felt some songs were forced together. It feels chaotic. Though that’s almost the point. I believe this album aged so well because we all are so nostalgic. Everyone thinks “these were the good old days” or at least my generation. Though if you really think about it — you probably hated this album like everyone else or at least knew not to play the majority of this playlist at any gathering. This all stated, this is an above “mid” album. It’s also a reminder to ourselves that true expression doesn’t need to be justified, or even liked by other’s. The fact it exists as an expression makes it art. Kanye West is a true genius and as most genius’ are, he is an outcasted member of society. Do I think he’s right the way he acts? No. Though every gift must have it’s burden. Keep in mind… “the good old days” had bad days too. Though as for Kanye, his music evolved — and so do we. Embrace the change.
