Critics and the Audience

It's really important for an experimental musician to find that place where they are uninhibited, but not yet self-indulgent. It becomes difficult to tell with this and Vol. 2 whether the musicians had their audience much in mind. Conceptually, I think it's very admirable to tackle a project like this with their own self-imposed rules, but I wonder if they shouldn't have kept doing sessions together until they had a number of tracks that truly worked to expose the audience to their concepts instead of keeping up this mysteriousness. I think this could have been more real and honest, only with more thought put into it. It's easy to see why they gave this a shot, but not easy to see why these all made it to CD.
