This is a brilliantly conceived collection of blind Willie Johnson covers. Standouts are Tom Waits, 'Soul of a man', Sinead O' Connor and the two tracks by Lucinda Williams. Lucinda Williams' tracks are worth the cover price alone. She gives two absolutely barnstorming performances that manage to tap in to the deeper, soulful roots of the music. If you like the music, please support the artists by buying this magnificent album.

Great compilation, though I've only given it a few listens and not really digested the music. I'm new to Johnson's work in general, as well. I bought one of his compilations of his original recordings to go along with this. But the performances of the songs by the artists on this album are superb.

A great tribute album to a terrific musician whose work is published in space. "Dark Was the Night" is one of the music tracks on the Voyager Golden Record, copies of which were placed on both the unmanned Voyager Project space probes in 1977. It is the penultimate track, preceding the Cavatina from Beethoven's String Quartet Op. 130: the blind musician and the deaf, side by side. Astronomer Timothy Ferris, who worked with Carl Sagan in selecting the tracks, said, Johnson's song concerns a situation he faced many times, nightfall with no place to sleep. Since humans appeared on Earth, the shroud of night has yet to fall without touching a man or woman in the same plight. (copied from Wikipedia)

Some great tracks here. Always great to hear Tom Waits interpret a song or two. But the Cowboy Junkies are also a stand out as is Luther Dickinson. Don’t download it. Buy it! The sound quality will be better and the musicians will get a larger slice of the money pie. Death to downloads. Support your local record store (if there still is one) or buy it from Amazon
